Canada have revealed that gambling is it's favourite past time! According to a report released by the Canadian Gaming Association, it accounts for 267,000 jobs in the country (137,000 of those being directly employed in the gambling industry) and adds a whopping 15.3 BILLION CD$ to their economy!
It is the most detailed report ever carried out in Canada and has outlined that 8.7 Billion CD$ is used to support charities and government services. 6.6CD$ goes towards purchase goods and services and paying salaries.
Critics call the report "one-sided' and have said although there is a lot of employment and economic revenue, does it affect the social costs; most importantly the issue being problem gambling?
Bill Rutsey of the Canadian Gaming Association has said that "gambling is a widely accepted activity, despite the "vocal minority within the population, approximately five per cent, who are opposed to gaming, primarily for moral reasons." "Part of this exercise is to actually get some information so that people can make rational judgements about the industry" he added.
