The current London Borough of Southwark was formed back in 1965 when the three metropolitan boroughs of Camberwell, Bermondsey and Southwark merged. It has a number of attractions such as Southwark Cathedral, Borough Market, The Tate Modern, The Globe and The Imperial War Museum to name just a few.
It is home to some of the most historic findings such as a plaque referring to London from the Roman period. The find was made on Tabard Street in 2004 during an archaeological dig in the area. Such excavation has revealed that Southwark has much prehistoric activity and there is evidence of early ploughing, burial mounds and ritual activity. However, the Romans abandoned Southwark in the fifth century and the city was left to decay. It was brought back to recovery during the reign of King Alfred and his successors in around 886 AD, when it was reoccupied and reconstructed.
Currently under construction is the Shard London Bridge. Once built it will be the tallest building in the country and will stand 310 meters high (1016ft) and will have 72 floors. Due to the construction of the tower there will be a makeover for the concourse at London Bridge Station. Additional shops, offices and flats are also to be built in the area as well as a public piazza and museum.
